The article explores the concept of the meaning of the metric system of records and public archives of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, Kingdom of Poland, Mazowian Duchy and the Rzecz Pospolita of XV-XVIII c. The history, organization and functionality of the so-called Lithuanian, Crown’s and Mazowian Metrics have been considered. The analysis of the functioning of metrics like database documents of the late medieval and early modern times has been made. Positive and negative aspects of the functioning of this medieval documental form have been highlighted. Modern analogies metrics in this sense have been done.
