In recent years, the scientists research into popular literature and make a reference to a literary contest as a precondition of its nascence. They also accent on the promotion role of the literary contest and express doubts for congruence of its organizational principles with law. It has been defined that the literary contest has not taken its place yet in the structure of publishing, it is not considered as a communicational link between an author and a publisher, and its potential has not been used in phases of edition preparing, book production, distribution and consumption. Basic issues of the contemporary literary contest have been allocated in this article, in particular, contradictions about its place and role in the system of Ukrainian publishing, the subjectivity of experts and members of jury, the imperfection of evaluation system, a large numbers of works with low quality because of non-availability of the tools of pre-screening, no interest of the participants of publishing, the insufficient information about the event, incorrectness of the rules and requirements, the danger of illegal using of the contest’s works, the unavailability of arbitrage and financial help.
