The article examines the content of websites and its components from the point of view of a specialist editor, who is called to maintain the quality of websites in accordance with their concept and the culture of electronic publications in general. Emphasis is placed on the primacy and complexity of the actual text content as the backbone of the website, regardless of its typological characteristics and distribution methods. After all, regardless of the audiovisual and graphic means of drawing attention to websites, only the text is able to fully satisfy the informational needs of Internet users.
The main difficulties, that arise in the development of websites by non-specialists, are analysed and the criteria for evaluating the quality of the textual content of websites for their further placement on the Internet are proposed. Also, based on the analysis of the text content of various types of websites, that are most active on the Internet, a classification of the correspondence of various subtypes of text content to certain types of websites is developed.
Under these conditions, the issue of preparing high-quality content is becoming increasingly urgent. This is the content that would be a full-fledged reliable data source, not copy-paste, meaningless or scanned text created in haste for a quick profit, or generated by the imperfect content created by modern GPT chat; the content, that would attract Internet readers both by the relevance and originality of the data, with the preservation of facts, and analytical data and the purity of the language, which makes it possible to write only by specialists-practitioners, checked by specialists-editors, and not by translation programs; the content, that would have practical value and enable its use in various fields of knowledge, for education or training; the content that would be of value.
